Omsk has become an assembly point for initiatives and best practices for the sustainable development of the SCO countries
At the first International Forum in Omsk, specific proposals were developed for sustainable development, the formation of a single carbon market and a common ESG assessment system.
On April 16, Omsk became the center of international dialogue. The SCO International Sustainable Development Forum was held here.
The event is organized by the Government of the Omsk Region and the Association of Clusters, Technoparks and Special Economic Zones of Russia together with the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation.
The Forum brought together representatives of government, business and the expert community to develop common approaches to sustainable development in the space of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
The key focus on the agenda is the exchange of best practices and the search for joint solutions that will help the SCO countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals more effectively.
The discussions focus on the role of national projects, new ESG rating mechanisms, non—financial risk assessment, as well as regional initiatives that are already showing results.
One of the main results was the approval of proposals to the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia. In particular, the forum participants supported the creation of a permanent international expert platform under the SCO Secretariat, the Council for Sustainable Development. Its task is to coordinate the efforts of the participating countries and develop coordinated solutions at the interstate level.
Another strategic initiative is the formation of a single carbon market in the SCO. Such a step will allow not only to harmonize the climate policy of the states of the region, but also to involve businesses in the process of transition to a low-carbon economy through trade mechanisms and incentives. It is planned to develop a multilateral regulatory program, create a quota trading platform, and launch pilot projects involving businesses.
In addition, the forum participants proposed to develop a unified methodology for assessing the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and unified criteria in the field of ESG. This will make it possible to bring together approaches to rating companies and government programs, and make the assessment system transparent and applicable to all participating countries.
Important initiatives have also been voiced for Russia. Among the recommendations is the creation of a unified system for monitoring the achievement of sustainable development goals at the federal and regional levels. Special emphasis is placed on the formation of a Bank of Regional Practices, which will allow us to replicate successful solutions throughout the country and strengthen coordination between government levels.
The Omsk International Forum has become not just a platform for discussions, but a driver of specific initiatives. As a result, a resolution was adopted with a list of proposals that can form the basis of new international and national solutions in the field of sustainable development.
