Omsk has become an assembly point for initiatives and best practices for the sustainable development of the SCO countries
Yesterday, the first International Forum for Sustainable Development of the SCO countries was held at the regional Congress Hall. The business event was attended by more than 500 participants, delegations from 6 countries and 11 regions of the Russian Federation.
The event was organized by the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia together with the Association of Clusters, Technoparks and SEZs of Russia and the Government of the Omsk region. Sberbank PJSC became a partner of the Forum.
The Forum's program covered key areas of sustainable development: from demonstrating successful regional initiatives and strengthening the role of business in territorial development to involving young people through interactive platforms.
The results of the Forum:
The Omsk Region was the first among the subjects of the Russian Federation to present a comprehensive model for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals until 2030. The document was presented by Andrey Shpilenko, Deputy Chairman of the Omsk Region Government, during the session "The Role of Business in the Development of Cities and Regions".
"The Omsk Region was the first in the country to present a model for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, which includes three key components: the strategy itself with a detailed implementation plan for each of the Sustainable Development Goals, the formation and publication of non-financial reports, as well as the promotion of sustainable development goals outside the region. The strategy includes an indicator framework for monitoring progress towards achieving the SDGs. A total of 173 indicators are included in the list," said Vitaliy Khotsenko.
The Forum participants supported the creation of a permanent international expert platform under the SCO Secretariat, the Council for Sustainable Development. Its task is to coordinate the efforts of the participating countries and develop coordinated solutions at the interstate level.
The formation of a single carbon market on the territory of the SCO in order to harmonize the climate policies of the states of the region, as well as the inclusion of business in the process of transition to a low-carbon economy through trade mechanisms and incentives.
Development of a unified methodology for assessing the achievement of sustainable development goals and unification of criteria in the field of ESG.
Considerable attention was paid to youth initiatives at the Forum. During the interactive session, Omsk students of various specialties interested in economic growth, environmental improvement and management improvement gained a practical understanding of sustainable development. Three student projects – a digital platform for international students in the SCO territories, the SCO Youth Water Council and the sustainable Investment platform – will be transferred to the SCO Youth Council and will serve as the basis for large-scale projects.
